Greetings to our friends, volunteers, stakeholders, and champions of UpWorks!

UpWorks is excited to share the news that we have completely rebranded, redesigned our website, and updated our vision and mission statement. We are so proud of our foundational programs that raise up and restore lives and families, and we feel our changes now strongly reflect our true goals and impact.

  • We are a bridge for at-risk students through our Enriching Schools Program, connecting them to local businesses and churches that can stand in the gap and help them succeed.
  • We are a bridge for inner-city young adults through our PACE Program, teaching the skills needed to secure, retain, and deliver excellence at their job so each participant can learn how to build a sustainable career. Success breeds success, and we teach the soft skills to gain this positive traction.
  • We are a bridge for adults coming out of crisis through our Empowering Adults Program as we help them move into a place of lasting personal change where they can continue to move their life forward – even through the hurdles we all face.

We believe our new logo, branding, website, and narrative strongly reflect our work and the outcomes we seek.

Please feel free to reach out to me to learn more about UpWorks, and I would love to meet with you at your convenience. Email at lisa@upworksmn.org or call 612-618-6936.

Warmest regards,

Lisa Peterson, Executive Director

Equipping Inner-City High School Students in Soft Skills

PACE Program

PYC Arts & Tech High School

Our PACE Program has partnered with PYC Arts & Tech High School, as Stacey Jones will be instructing a course this school year. This partnership started as a PBL (Project Based Learning) elective; however, after conversations with the school, they decided to shift our course to a stand-alone class. PYC saw the value in the PACE Program because our training emphasizes equipping the students in soft skills development and walking alongside each participant as they seek to discover the next steps after high school. Every student who completes this course will gain conflict resolution skills and increase cultural competency, emotional intelligence, and critical decision-making skills.

Our PACE Program is career-focused, not job-focused, as Stacey Jones, UpWorks Director of Community Relations, shares, “We are empowering young men of color through education and inspiring them to become career-minded through establishing practical goals as they dream!”

Opportunities for You to Contribute this Season

Enriching Schools Program

Ken Norman, Director of Enriching Schools

 Enriching Schools Program Thanksgiving

Would you consider contributing winter coats for students in need or donate a Thanksgiving turkey for an inner-city family?

Our Enriching Schools Program is partnering with churches and other civic-minded organizations to support students and families within our inner-city partner schools to prepare for the upcoming winter months. We are currently working with partners on donating winter coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and boots to help kids stay warm through the cold season.

For the Thanksgiving holiday, we are coordinating a donation of turkeys to a special program one of our partner schools runs to support families who would struggle to put Thanksgiving dinner on the table.

If you can personally contribute to this meaningful project or are part of an organization that would like to make a difference by donating new elementary school-age winter coats or Thanksgiving turkeys, please contact our Enriching Schools Director, Ken Norman at ken@upworksmn.org.

Transforming the Path of Jonathan’s Life

Empowering Adults Program

Kevin Saunders, Director of Empowering Adults

Jonathan, an Empowering Adults Program 2019 Graduate

Jonathan, an Empowering Adults Program 2019 Graduate, struggled with alcohol and drug addiction for many years. After completing his long-term recovery, with a local treatment facility, Jonathan was overwhelmed with the thought of what he would do next. Partnering with his Life Advocates, Jonathan pressed into the Self-Discovery phase and determined his passion for working in the airline industry. He and his Life Advocates created a plan and worked diligently on specific targets. Success came when Jonathan landed an interview with Southwest Airlines. Jonathan is now employed by Southwest Airlines in Denver, CO.

Are you interested in becoming a volunteer Life Advocate? Complete our Life Advocate Volunteer Interest Form, and the UpWorks team will be in contact with you.
